All Babies Need Full Time Care, Some Need Even More

By Faith Valentine
Some days you wake up, blissfully unaware that your life is about to change forever. How could I have known, whilst drinking my morning coffee on June 2nd 2010, that my son would end up on life support later that day? He was 10 weeks old.
Picture
Little Max just two days before he suffered a stroke.

We spent a week in intensive care.
Max was just ‘a little bit off’ that morning. He was a bit grissly, a bit sleepy and a bit pale. Symptoms that were so darn subtle in a 10 week old and nothing catastrophic enough to indicate that a blood vessel in his brain had burst.
He had been eating well, sleeping well and he had no temperature. But, the niggles in my tummy grew stronger and stronger. Something wasn’t right.I decided to take him to the Children’s Hospital. I even packed a big bag of supplies- bottles for him and sandwiches for me, thinking that we’d be sitting around the Emergency Department all day.
By the time we arrived at the hospital, his body was limp and he was in respiratory arrest.Later that day, we were told that he’d suffered a brain hemorrhage. His platelets were dangerously low and this had caused the bleed. We spent one week in intensive care.

The next day, we were told he’d had a massive stroke that had damaged almost half the left side of his brain. On that day, he had seizures, lots of seizures. The seizures were causing his brain to swell dangerously, so he was placed in a medically induced coma. It was important to me that mine was the last voice he heard.

Faith Valentine is a psychiatric nurse who used to live to party and drink beer. She never wanted kids, she was far too selfish. Then Max came along and now she lives for him. Max has showed her strength, that she never knew she had. He has taught her to fight for what she believes in. He has shown her the true meaning of love. All in less than a year.

"He was on a dose of steroids, 32times the normal dose. Have you ever seen a baby with ‘roid rage?’. It ain’t pretty."

So, I took a deep breath, read him his favorite story and sang incy wincy spider. There was a  giant lump in my thoat and tears streaming down my cheeks, but somehow I got through. We then spent 5 weeks on the Neuro ward, whist doctors frantically searched for a treatment, that would stop his body from attacking his platelets. In the space of 5 weeks, he had 94 platelet transfusions and the occasional blood transfusion. He was on a dose of steroids, 32times the normal dose. Have you ever seen a baby with ‘roid rage?’. It ain’t pretty.
Finally, he started on a treatment that has only been used on a handful of babies worldwide. It was ‘experimental’ treatment in our case. We had no idea what to expect. Thankfully it worked and he didn’t grow a tail.
When we left the hospital, the hardest part of our journey began. We had virtually no supports, to teach us the rehabilitation strategies we desperately needed. The hospitals physiotherapy service, said they’d see him when he was ‘more disabled’. Early Childhood Intervention services had a 1-2 year waiting list and older children had priority.
I fought to get him a place in early intervention. I found a private physiotherapist who specializes in children with brain injuries. I worked far too many hours to fund his private physio.
I researched every opportunity I had and eventually stumbled across a Neuro-Developmental program in the UK called ‘Snowdrop for brain injured children. The Snowdrop program has helped him so much. It’s sad that nothing similar exists in Australia.
Every day, Max and I do an intense therapy routine, it fills 80% of our day. The days where we haven’t done much therapy, he regresses. I cannot put him in Childcare, because they do not have the resources to facilitate the hours of therapy he needs.
The brain damage has resulted in Max having cerebral palsy, vision problems & right sided hemiplegia. His right hand is always in a fist, it takes several massages/stretches
throughout the day, to stop it from permanently staying like that. Without the hard work we do with his right arm, it would become non-functional. Every morning, I wake knowing that I am responsible for 99% of his rehabilitation. The pressure often gets too much.
We have been rejected for Carer Payment twice, because Max doesn’t ‘tick enough boxes’. ‘Boxes’ which are applicable to an older child and not an infant. We need to wait until he is ‘more disabled’ before we become eligible.
So, I’m fighting another battle. I’m urging the Australian Government to review the legislation pertaining to Carer payments. Sadly, ours is not an isolated case. They say that ‘all babies need full time care’, I say ‘some babies need even more’.
No family, should be told to wait until their baby is ‘more disabled’ before the Government provides assistance. I love you Max, you inspire me every day with your stubborn determination. You are my hero.

Game On! What Games Should Kids Play?

2/12/2012

Kids love video games - they're exciting, fun and engrossing. While games can promote learning and growth, too much video gaming - or playing inappropriate games - can lead to negative consequences.

What should parents know to make good game choices for their children?

  1. Become familiar with the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. These ratings are designed to help potential players understand the game's content and offer guidance on which games are appropriate for different ages. * Explore www.familyfriendlyvideogames.com. This site provides a report card on games, with detailed descriptions of game content, technical performance and kid friendliness.

  2. * Understand the types of games on the market: edutainment (educational games focusing on teaching the player), role playing games (that offer deep story and character development), action games (that train and enhance hand-eye coordination), simulation games (building vehicles such as planes or cars) and strategy games.

  3. * Use online reviews, ask other parents, ask the staff at your local store - and play games with your kids.

Video games are here to stay. And when appropriately used, they can provide an opportunity for families to play together as well as for kids to learn and grow.

POP queen Beyonce and husband Jay-Z have shared the first snaps of their bub Blue Ivy Carter.

POP stars Beyoncé and Jay-Z have rewarded fans for respecting their privacy by sharing the first pictures of their baby, Blue Ivy Carter. The proud parents posted a series of intimate portraits of their beloved daughter, who was born just over a month ago.

Instead of selling their first baby pictures to a glossy magazine for millions the music megastar couple decided to take control posting snaps of Blue to a tumblr blog.

In one snap the 30-year-old singer is seen beaming into the camera while she cradles her daughter in her arms.

While the camera is out of focus on the former Destiny's Child singer, with clarity on baby Blue, Beyoncé's blue nails can be clearly seen, no doubt a tribute to her little bundle.

The proud parents set up a blog that shows the intimate family snaps along with a message. It read: 'We welcome you to share in our joy. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives. The Carter Family.'

Too Much TV, video Games Making KindyKids Fatter

Pre-2000 KindyKids were a lot skinnier, according to a study by Murdoch Children's Research Institute.
In 2012, more than 8000 more kindykids are overweight or obese compared to those in 2004. There are also more overweight and obese parents.
The study by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute found children have healthier diets, but they are exercising less and watching TV more.
Paediatrician and lead author Professor Melissa Wake said: "There's been a lot of concern about the obesity epidemic, and particularly about rates in Australian children, which are very high.
"There have been a lot of reports, a lot of initiatives and one would hope that, as a result, overweight or obesity would be stabilising or falling.
"To our great concern it looks as though rates of overweight and obesity have continued to rise and, concerningly, young children are watching a bit more television."
The researchers compared four and five-year-old children across the country in 2004, and then a different cohort in 2008. They found the number of preschoolers watching television for three hours or more a day rose from about one in five to about one in four during the week, and from just more than one in five to almost one in three at weekends.
Diane Smith, of Toowong, said keeping active was an important part of four-year-old Tracey's family life.
"Time spent out doing fun activities with the family is so much better than sitting in front of the TV," she said. "You just need to organise yourself so that when you do have the time, it's quality time."

Milton Kindy classmate Brian, 4, also keeps active by playing cricket, football and riding his bike. Dad, Ben, said it was important to make time for exercise. "It's hard sometimes because I work long hours, but you just have to make time to keep active," he said.
Professor Wake said researchers had to find out what worked. Authorities then must implement whole-of-community approaches.

The Surf Rescue book was written by Peter Williams, an ex-lifesaver and someone with a passion for education.

This exciting story book for young children is a rich source of valuable personal safety information and a great asset for teachers and parents.

As a lifesaver in Queensland Australia, Peter saved many lives, but died of leukemia in 2010.
Before he died Peter wanted to make sure that the Surf Rescue book would be published.
Now thousands of children can read the story and learn valuable lessons about beach safety and the work of our great Surf Lifesavers.

Is Your Child a Fast Food Baby?

_Would you ever put your four-year-old on a diet to fit into her pageant dress? How about restrict your eight-year-olds daily calorie intake before a competition, bake her cake as a reward and then pile on the guilt as she eats it?  It might sound ludicrous to some but it's not uncommon on America’s trainwreck of a reality show, Toddlers and Tiaras .

Seriously, though, One in every three kids growing up today will become an overweight adult. That's why it's so important for parents to deal with childhood obesity to prevent a generation of young people being the first to live shorter lives than their parents.

Here are some ideas which may help you and your child

Clowning Around Helps Sick Kids

__The children's wards of major Australian hospitals are home to pediatricians, nurses, neonatologists and others. But in their ranks are some people whose jobs have little to do with medical schools - and a lot  to do with a pie in the face.

French researchers say the use of clowns to help brighten the spirits of hospitalized kids, making treatment for such awful things as cancer far easier to deal with. In a study for the British medical journal The Lancet, researchers at Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif say clowns turn a grim environment into sources of fascination - for example, turning the dripping of an IV unit into the beat of a calypso song.

The researchers say the clowns and their young patients form a bond that is private - not even accessible to the doctors treating the youngsters. This allows the kids to express their feelings about what they're undergoing - sometimes in a confidential journal.
