TWO four-year-old boys who snuck unnoticed out of a Sydney childcare centre probably thought they were on a "great adventure", police say.
Investigations are under way into how the boys managed to escape from Cubbyhouse Childcare in Lane Cove on Tuesday and wander the streets for 40 minutes before being picked up by a bus driver.
But North Shore Local Area Command Superintendent Robert Critchlow said while parents were worried, the escapees were probably having he time of their lives.
"My understanding is they thought they were off on a great adventure," Supt Critchlow told reporters.
"They formed a decision amongst themselves to leave for reasons best known to them and showed great initiative ... to secure their exit from the centre.
"Obviously ... the parents were deeply concerned but the children were having a whale of a time."
The children opened the gates of Cubbyhouse Childcare on Mowbray Road about 4pm on Tuesday and walked out together.
The bus driver saw them on busy Epping Road 40 minutes later and took them on board, contacting police to arrange for them to meet the pair.
The boys were not injured.
The matter has now been referred to the Education Department, which has launched an inquiry.
The manager of the childcare centre declined to comment.
